For the eco-minded traveler, the notion of “green vacations” has focused almost exclusively on what to do when you get to your destination, not on how to get there. But can the carbon emissions from your vacation travel really vary that much? According to a new report from the Union of Concerned Scientists entitled Getting There Greener: The Guide to Your Low-Carbon Vacation, the answer is a definite yes.
Their analysis shows that three key factors determine the environmental impact of your travel: the type of vehicle you are taking, the distance you are traveling, and the number of people traveling with you. Based on these factors, you can compare the carbon emissions of your travel options and choose a travel option that reduces your travel-related emissions. Review the Vacation Carbon Tips and Carbon Chart below to rank your travel options along these three categories.
